Well one of my modules in uni involves photography and seeing as I have never actually done much on photography, I got hold of a Nikon D40 SLR and started to attempt using it and fiddle around with settings to take different pictures, here are some of the pictures I have taken so far.

Beautiful photos. The image quality leaves me drooling. I wish my camera could capture a shot half as well. You're got a good eye too. smile.gif

Yes you should come here tongue.gif

Had an amazing day today weather wise, already starting to feel like summer! Its been around 23-25 degrees all day and still going strong, makes me want to jump in the ocean lol.

Now to the monkeys.... well there are 2 groups apes, one of them are wild so they are just roaming in the wild up the rock and then there is another batch of them which are watched and taken care of. The one in the picture is from the "tamed" bunch.

Photo tip... great photos mate ... however in any landscape shots the horizon must be horizontal it makes a much more striking photo.. Unless your going for a creative photo like the 3rd one

no worries post some pics and I'll give you some constructive comments... It's worth noting that photography like all the arts isn't an exact science and breaking the "rules" makes for some of the best results.... However knowing the basics is a good starting point...

The rule of thirds is the most basic concept and following that is the best start... there's too much info to post here ... but this site is a good start The Rule of thirds I don't think his photos are good examples but it will give an idea.... Composition is the must fundamental concept what do I want in my shot, where do I want it, does the photo tell a story, or is it just a record shot of an event... The rule of thirds helps you organize everything in the frame.."Natural" creative photographers do this without instruction because it looks most pleasing to the eye... It's the difference between a snap shot and a shot that makes everyone say wow that's a great photo....

I don't mean to pick on neoghio because for someone new to photography his photos are good and someone being over critical can put you off but most of his photos are just good snap shots not great art... I took 5000 photos in India and there's maybe 50 I think are great shots...

This shot has relatively good composition with a great expression on the monkeys face however the wall he's sitting on the fir on his back and under his arm is over exposed killing detail... The highlight feature on the camera will show this, with the burnt out areas flashing, recompose with a faster shutter speed or smaller aperture... You loose the moment which is why is can be so hard to get live action shots without a lot of patience....

I took loads of photos of monkeys this is probably the best 1and it's over exposed too... wildlife photography like landscapes takes a lifetime to master... I'm lucky that I have a natural eye for portraits and this is why most photographers specialise the variations are too vast to learn it all... although a great photographer can make any subject look good...

here's some more photos here be as critical as you like....

Remember the comments are just my own and other photographers have different ideas about what makes a great photo.. But one things for sure really good photos make people comment on them.. check out ansel adams one of the best photographers EVER for composition and "feel" hundreds of photographers have tried to copy his shots going to exact locations at exact times of year but no one can do it like he did...bloody inspirational... cept he could put you off a bit lol...

you might want to try photomatix pro and do some hdr photograhy. its all the rage at the moment. if you do try to desaturate slightly and the photos will look fine.
your photos need to be slightly better composed and not taken in the harsh light of midday.
