so...the other day my gf updated utorrent and now its not working at all. I have installed older versions, different clients (vuze/btcomet etc) no luck. The ports are forwarded correctly but i keep getting the msg: "no connection could be made because the target machine actively refused it." Not sure what is going on, racked my brain, went into my router, my anti virus/firewall/windows firewall etc. She's running vista btw. Everything worked fine till she did the update, now nothing works torrent-wise at all. I've also tried many different torrent files from many different sites, still no luck, I've run out of ideas, any help would be awesome! Thanks soupers!

I've seen that message. It shouldn't be a problem if DHT is enabled and allowed.

I've enabled and disabled and enabled dht a dozen times, I'll give it another go. The wierd thing is...its not just utorrent, every other client I've tried doesn't work, the downloads just don't even start. I've been doing the torrent thing for years now and have never had this problem, driving me

Have you tried a private tracker (ie. torrent with many seeds, few peers)? Have you tried to connect on another pc on her connection?

I have tried a private tracker, no dice. I am connected with my pc, on the same network, she's got the laptop, I use the desktop. Haven't tried with her connection on my pc though, not sure what that would tell me, I'll give it a go though, tomorrow, gotta go to sleep now! Thanks for the replies BladeD.

If you can connect with the other pc, the problem is on her pc. If you can't, the problem could be the connection (you need to try this with a pc/laptop that's working (ie. downloading ok via bittorent).
Since you can't connect, how do you know the port is forward correctly? But I can use utorrent even if the port is not correctly forwarded, it just takes longer to connect and it's slower. This post has been edited by BladeD: Feb 25 2009, 03:08 PM |

"going thru" your FW and Router wont do, when you update a app you need to make sure (especially in the FW) that its the latest version of the app your using, check out that.

Try the portcheck function in utorrent, it's in speedguide somewhere. Or just use http://www.utorrent.com/testport.php?port=insertporthere . That way you know for sure if the firewall and router settings are right.
Last time I saw that error all I needed to do was reboot my router. As it's windoze and more particularly vista make sure some security thing wasn't automatically reactivated by doing the update. (would explain why other clients are also affected). If you share the connection make sure you use different ports otherwise the portcheck will detect _your_ open port and give a false port is open result. Some isps and trackers block standard ports so make sure to use a random one. |

QUOTE "going thru" your FW and Router wont do, when you update a app you need to make sure (especially in the FW) that its the latest version of the app your using, check out that. yea, its the latest version, at first I couldn't figure this one out because there were about 4 or 5 "utorrents" listed in the firewall exception, I deleted all of them, started over installing the program and checked the only one. @biebel, yah I used the speed checker, said the port was working properly. I'm using the same port for my desktop and her laptop, had no problem with that till she updated, worked fine. How do you reboot your router? Sounds unsafe. QUOTE As it's windoze and more particularly vista make sure some security thing wasn't automatically reactivated by doing the update. (would explain why other clients are also affected). yah, its vista, which is another sort of problem just cause I'm not used to it. What security thing would reactivate? I think I have checked everything, but may be missing something. |

QUOTE I'm using the same port for my desktop and her laptop. If that's on the same connection only the lan ip that that port is forwarded to in the router will receive incoming connections. Furthermore when you do the port test you still won't know whether she is connected because it will detect the open port on your computer. To be really sure it's not a routing/firewall problem make her ip the dmz in the modem-router and turn of any and all firewalls if you have a separate modem just plug her laptop directly in it so she has a direct internet connection and ip. You can reboot your router by finding the reboot button in the interface or locate the reset button on the router itself and press it shortly (usually you need a pin for it) if you keep it pressed in too long say +3secs most routers will revert to factory settings or you can just unplug and replug the power cord. It's quite safe. I tried the vista beta and hated how it did all sort of things without asking, not do things I asked it to, was a resource hog and way too large, which led me to switching to ubuntu as my main OS. So I'm pretty clueless about vista settings too. There's a post somewhere on the forum (gen tech prolly) about the 20 things to do after installing vista maybe it's in there somewhere. The fact that other clients have the same problem leads me to believe the problem is not caused by the utorrent update directly unless the upnp, which is still quite dodgy on most routers made your router go tits up or it triggered something in the os. |
