It's only thanks to attitudes like yours, YMG, that British citizens died for 'nothing' on the Falklands. In my eyes, and theirs they died for something.

It's only thanks to attitudes like yours, YMG, that British citizens died for 'nothing' on the Falklands. In my eyes, and theirs they died for something. Care to share your logic behind that, and amuse me some more – because for the life of me I cant see how you have taken a comment that’s more akin to the second world war and applied it to the Falklands war / conflict |

Simply put if a British citizen can't even stand and be counted in support of people who risk their lives for their countrymen, the soldiers life is forfeit for no cause at all.
NOTE - As honest as it was I edited my last post because I felt it didn't further the thread. This post has been edited by m15hun: Aug 7 2008, 02:39 AM |

Pointing at no-one in particular, but lets all make sure personal comments are kept out of this thread folks. Feelings are strong on all sides, and we don't want an interesting thread closed. ~torrenter

@YMG: I cannot find a link for that so I retract my statement. But we've closed our big industry years ago (textile, coal mines). We do have loads of natural gas, so we're still exporting that. But most our industry is capital intensive so not that much labour involved (to expensive).
The Netherlands also has a big role in supplying the rest of Europe, so we got our harbours for that. |

If you don't defend what is yours others will just make it theirs. If there aren't any consequence for people taking what is yours they won't have a problem taking more and more. Not everyone in the world is polite and respectful of others.
Some estimates say that there are 60 billion barrels of oil under the ocean around the Falkland Islands. If the speculation about oil in the Falkand Islands proves out it could prove to be a valuable property for the UK. Justifying expense in protecting it even if the above might not be sufficient justification for some. Perhaps like the US purchase of Alaska from Russia, which was thought foolish by many (Seward's Folly), history will prove that defending the Islands was a good decision. I think the quote goes something like this: “Buy land, they're not making it anymore” This post has been edited by zoomer: Aug 7 2008, 09:14 AM |

It's only thanks to attitudes like yours, YMG, that British citizens died for 'nothing' on the Falklands. They did die for nothing. ALL wars are stupid, but the particularly stupid ones, like the Falklands war, are the ones fought for no other reason than someone's ego or to stir up jingoism for political ends. The Falklands could have been avoided very easily before it even started.... Once it had started it could have been resolved politically. Thatcher saw it as a way to stir up jingoism and support her failing government, just as the Junta in Buenos Aires did... Thatcher's reasons for war were as bad as the military dictators in Argentina, perhaps even worse.... she had the opportunity to prevent it, and she chose not to. Some say she simply f*cked up her assessment of the intelligence, others say she let it develop deliberately to detract the public from her failing govt. Every British serviceman who died in that war, spunked away their lives to support Thatcher's political career, and nothing else. A cursory look at the Dutch economy shows it to have a very healthy balance of trade... and stronger than average growth. If you don't defend what is yours others will just make it theirs. If there aren't any consequence for people taking what is yours they won't have a problem taking more and more. The Falklands are no more "ours" than Gibraltar is, and Hong Kong was. If those Halibut smelling, sheep rustlers want to be British, they should bloody well move to the UK and stop expecting us to continue paying through the taxpayer's nose to keep them part of an empire that died nearly two generations ago. |

I'm hoping she dies before I leave the country. Otherwise I polished my dancing boots for nothing.
They'd better bury her face down, just in case. |
