I think it's common knowledge that politicians say what people want to hear. It's really the only way they can get enough people to vote for them in order to win an election.
Do any leaders you have voted for stand out as actually doing the things that you voted them into office to do? It doesn't have to be president or prime minister, just someone that you voted for. If so, what things did they do and why did you want them done? Or maybe they did things you wouldn't have approved of but turned out to be good? This is more of a conversation starter and a matter of curiosity for me. I personally can't remember a time that someone I wanted in a position of power didn't end up disappointing me when they got it. Maybe I'm just too critical. |

I don't think you are being too critical. Most politicians are self-serving fuckwits. I have to say, in a realistic world, if you didn't do what you said you would when you got the job, you'd be fired.

Not too critical at all, most people aren't critical enough of electoral politics. I very rarely vote, when I do it's only to vote for the lesser of two evils. For example, voting NDP only because I was afraid of Steven Harper becoming PM. My fear was realized now we are stuck with that ass hat. I may have been better off voting for the Liberals, but could never bring myself to ever be attached to anything called "liberal".
edit forgot to answer the initial question, the answer would be a resounding no. This post has been edited by deadprez: Jul 14 2008, 06:26 AM |

A politician doing what they said they would do? what a thought....
I voted Labour, they pretty much did what they said they would do, the only problem is that they have wasted billions of pounds and fucked up everything they touched. The one thing that was on the '97 manifesto that I would love them to do is introduce PR. |

As I've got older, I have realised that with few exceptions, politicians of all parties do the best they can when in power to make the country better - but have (increasingly less) different methods.
Gone are the days of socialism in the UK. UK politics is like US politics now, and it would take another conscription war for UK subjects to put aside personal greed as a motivating factor. |

Party politics and politicians toeing the party line, in order to retain their power and or position, has made me become utterly disillusioned with politics
So to that end, no politician has stood out as being a person of their word to me Although I suppose if I think hard enough I could conjure up a character, as the media usually like to label them, that places their principals and beliefs above that of having their snout in the trough – but the whole shower in Westminster aren’t really worth that time |

Just look to the US, to see what happens when the wrong person is elected.

Wouldnt' matter who was elected in the States, the country is run by corporations, not the government. Same goes for Canada, only a little lighter, like light sald dressing.
