Has anyone/everyone seen Religulous yet? If not, go. now. haha. What a great film, not only a laugh a minute, but also very important for lifting the false veil of "respecting" religion. Religion should be made fun of, every chance one gets. With "The God delusion" and "Religulous", "Zeitgeist" also "God is not Great" all being released and having great sales or at least lots of views/reads, I see some (very little, but still some) hope for human kind. Are people finally getting it? Religion is Bullshit, its all fairy tales, no different than Zeus, Oden, Isis etc. Stories are great, but they are just stories. Bill Maher is a hero.

For those, like me, who know neith who Bill Maher is, or what the film is about, here's a link to the IMDB comments page
I wonder about the purpose of the film - preaching to the atheist converted? I like my views being agreed with, so I'll probably watch it when it becomes available, and laugh at the jokes. |

I think torrenter's hit the nail on the head. I'm an atheist and I'm sure I'd find it funny. At the same time, I don't think it achieves much. I don't really care what other people believe, so long as they keep (or are kept) from imposing their views on me or those around me, and I find the lecturing, self righteous tone of many atheist authors as grim as the rantings of a fire and brimstone, 'jesus hates fags', preacher.
I guess it's good that atheists in the US are daring to voice their lack of belief, but doubt they will do much to directly convert many people away from irrational belief. |

They're welcome to knock on my door, and have a little chat if they want, just not to stop women have abortions or gay people getting married, or whatever. Thats the problem right there. Religious people don't keep it to themselves. They infiltrate almost every aspect of life. I was told to make a pledge to "god" at a polling station last week, I lost a dear friend of mine, who was an athiest but the funeral was still held at a church, religious people, fanatics in fact, run many governments around the world and start wars because "god" told them to, religious groups don't pay taxes, athletes can't shut up about how god helped them win whatever it is they do, missionaries still make a point of spreading the word of "god" while pretending to be humanitarians. QUOTE I guess it's good that atheists in the US are daring to voice their lack of belief, but doubt they will do much to directly convert many people away from irrational belief. It is good, very good, and I do believe people will/can be swayed away from the brainwashing as long as people speak up about the scam that is religion. I was raised in a christian houshold but turned my back on that religion thanks to Dio, Slayer, Venom and a host of other metal bands. Hopefully films such as this will sway other young people if metal doesn't get em first.I don't really think it is simply "preaching to the converted", it's purpose is to get the message out that not everyone (esp in the states) is a crazy jesus freak. It's always good to know your not alone. |

You have a point there: while I'm from an atheist, socialist, background, some of the more radical aspects of my beliefs were first inspired by listening to anarchopunk bands like Crass. I guess 'pop culture' stuff like this does have a role to play, even if it's just bringing new ideas out into the open, and encouraging people (particularly young people) to explore them further.

They're welcome to knock on my door, and have a little chat if they want, just not to stop women have abortions or gay people getting married, or whatever. Now that raises a very interesting point about secularism.... I'm sure many people here cheered-on the environmental activists at Kingsnorth earlier this year as they took direct action to try and prevent a coal fired power station being built. How odd, then, when theists try to do the same and organise rallies/protests against issues they feel strongly against, the same people cheering-on those at Kingsnorth suddenly lose their sense of what's right and play the secularism card to say they shouldn't be allowed to do it. Don't get me wrong, I'm a staunch secularist, but I don't believe that secularism extends to the point where theists cannot politicise or allow their religious beliefs to influence politics... Secularism isn't about denying theists the right to politicise issues that are guided by their faith, such as abortion or gay marriage. It seems to me that people play the secularism card far too readily when faced with real political issues, just because those raising the issues are theists. |

Again, they can express their views on what should be the law as much as the next man: they can riot for all I care, although I'm not too keen on them blowing themselves up in public places, or launching crusades. I will however resist anyone imposing their own morality on my, and my friends, actions as much as is necessary.
