My daughter is starting to learn the Violin next week in school however she is only 8 and will want to practice at home and im not sure what the school will be sending home. Can anyone advise me on the best DVD's for children or any other media as I would like to try and learn it with her to help and give morale support.

I would like to try and learn it with her to help and give morale support. Good luck with that. I played the violin when I was a kid. That was back in the olden days when TV was still black and white so there were no DVDs or CDs. but I can tell ya that a child's violin is 3/4ths the size of an adults and you won't be able to help her much at all. You won't be able to hold it properly or fit your fingers on the frets. The bow is shorter as well. I would say the best thing you can do is listen to her . . . it will be painful . . . and learn the proper posture and hand positions so you can gently guide her as she learns. The violin is one of the hardest instruments to learn to play but children learn fast and it's much easier for them because their hands are more nimble and dexterous. I think they also have an innocent and better ear for music. You might want to play violin concertos so she can enjoy the sound and anticipate what she will learn. |

Just make sure she practices - I done brass when I was a kid and really, unless you play yourself, all you can do is listen, praise and ensure shes practicing .

Practice, practice, practice. Just be there to support and encourage her when she gets frustrated (and she surely will at some stage).
