Windows XP has a bad value in the registry that can boost the performance of your PC considerably when you fix it. To fix this problem is very easy. In fact some may have it fixed and will see no improvement.
The problem is they preserved a setting from Windows NT and it is the wrong value for XP. To see the value stored in the registry it is in this key: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\PriorityControl This value determines how much CPU resource is given to programs. If this key has the value of 2 then your PC can get a boost. The correct value is 26 hexadecimal or 38 decimal. To change this number, do the following: 1. Right click on My Computer. 2. Click Properties. 3. Click the Advanced tab. 4. In the Performance box click the settings button. A new window will open. 5. Click the Advanced tab. 6. In the Processor Scheduling box, click the Background Services radio button. And click Apply. 7. Click Programs and click Apply. This will put the correct value in the key. You can check it! Reboot and you will notice a faster boot and programs will seem to be more crisp in most occasions. The faster your CPU the less you will notice. But when you reinstall XP this is one thing you need to do when you set it up every time. Also, unless you are running a server you should have Programs selected in the Memory usage box. For more information on this setting you can look here: http://www.mcpmag.com/columns/article.asp?EditorialsID=405 Go down half the page and look in the box titled "Advanced Priority Control" This is somewhat technical but it explains why the default value of 2 is just plain wrong. Using the above website will let you tweak this setting for more performance if you desire. |

A quick question.
In step 6 I clicked the Background Services radio button and then clicked Apply. In step 7 it says to Click Programs and click Apply. I'm assuming the "Programs" I'm suppose to click is under "Memory usage" as shown in the pic below. Is this correct?
