OK so I've been reading up on dark matter and dark energy (google it) but there's a new kid on the block "dark flow" witch would mathematically imply that many universes are converging together ... If this is the case, on the multiverse spectrum of existence we are less than bacteria ... So, how does all that is is implied or documented in LLP really matter... Can one atom offend another, are emotions relevant? and if so why?

QUOTE Trin Tragula was a dreamer, a thinker, a speculative philosopher or, as his wife would have it, an idiot. She would nag him incessantly about the utterly inordinate amount of time he spent staring out into space, or mulling over the mechanics of safety pins, or doing spectrographic analyses of pieces of fairy cake.
“Have some sense of proportion!” she would say, sometimes as often as thirty-eight times in a single day. And so he built the Total Perspective Vortex, just to show her. Into one end he plugged the whole of reality as extrapolated from a piece of fairy cake, and into the other end he plugged his wife: so that when he turned it on she haw in one instant the whole infinity of creation and herself in relation to it. To Trin Tragula’s horror, the shock completely annihilated her brain; but to his satisfaction he realized that he had proved conclusively that if life is going to exist in a Universe of this size, then the one thing it cannot have is a sense of proportion. |

Hah, nice one fog. Love that little side story.
Lending importance to proportion seems to be irrelevant. Looking down the spectrum of scale, towards both quarks and universes, we have yet to find an endpoint and I doubt we ever will. Does infinite even have proportions? We have created arbitrary points of reference in our search to find where exactly we fit into it all. |

QUOTE (harflie) where exactly we fit in Ok so i hijacked the quote a little... But I think that is the question, Where the fuck do we fit into this ...errr emmmm space ?.... Why do I get so pissed off when some c*nt in his beemer cuts me up at the junction... It matters to me , at the time .... QUOTE (arrghhhhhhhhhh) Solipsism "I stink therefore I'm spam.." all very well and good but is green the same colour in my mind as it is in your virtual mind..... QUOTE (buzz) Didn't I tell you baby? I'm Zaphod Beeblebrox! probably the most intelligent thing you've ever said QUOTE (foggy) foggys bit good quote but what do YOU think, without being pedantic or "holier than thou" ... why do emotions matter are they personal, subjective, and insular or can they effect the multi verse do we have an impact on Ahem! "creation" (btw I can't believe I spelled "which" as "witch" bet you were fuming ... my bad....) This post has been edited by bigbaldybloke: Mar 13 2010, 11:24 AM |

OK well I read this bit in a book once which said that Bertrand Russell had decided that there is an external world but that we have no direct experience of it. This is pretty much what I think, that we operate in a world via a proxy model of it that is constructed from our sensory input.
I think that reality is just a protocol which we negotiate among ourselves to regulate the proxy models in our heads, so that they conform to an extent that makes co-operative effort possible. This is different from solipsism in that it acknowledges the existence of others and anticipates that others are at least partially alike. As for the place of human emotion in the grand scheme of things this is a matter of your internal wiring and neuro-chemistry. We all have emotions and some people feel that they are the only authentic experiences that they have. Others think that emotions are part of a package of data which colour sensory input which although useful and sometimes pleasurable have to be controlled in order not to skew the proxy model of the world in our heads so badly that it is no longer useful. That's it in a nutshell. If you're talking about a sense of perspective, I'd claim that a single continent is too big for a single human to truly grasp. |

That's a bloody good answer.... But.... Bertrand Russell, was he not gay ...... ?
ooo and where does YMG's god fit in...... : QUOTE (foggy) I'd claim that a single continent is too big for a single human to truly grasp. agreed...... however I think the complexity of a peanut is too big for a single human to truly grasp. (or a lot of the ones I've met)

I don't understand why a proposed larger multiverse would make people feel less significant than a traditional universe that is to all intents and purposes, infinite already.
Or am I missing something? |

This was discussed on Horizon the other week http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b00rgg31
Because flaws were showing in the standard model of cosmology, which supported the big bang theory, dark matter, dark energy and black flow were theorised to fill the gaps. If you read the theories about Quantum Physics then you will see how science is explaining the relationship not just between atoms but photons and how they can exist in multiple places in different forms at the same time until observed. "Schrodinger's Cat" is worth looking up also. |
