6% of the populace voted BNP. A good deal more than that are in moralpanic about the immigration red herring. So yes Biebel I guess you're right that many people will harbour racist or protectionist thoughts without neccesarily wanting to see it played out in the public sphere. My dad's like that - he'll whinge till the cows come home about immigrants and people sponging off the state. But he wouldn't give the time of day to anybody further right than centre-right.

I guess we do have to differentiate between racism and anti-immigration. The two often go hand-in-hand, but sometimes they do not. Some virulently anti-migration people would just as virulently deny that their views were 'race-based'. But the BNP still talk about 'indigenous' British people, which is practical code for white anglo-saxons.

Interestingly, the same shift to the right is happening here in NZ, but it's so mild you can barely detect it. There's no public discussion of anti-immigration policies, just a vague feeling that jobs should be prioritised for Kiwis, and that the rules that already exist that require an employer to prove that the job they're offering can't be filled by a Kiwi are actually applied. I guess that's what you get when a quarted of your population are first-gen immigrants and most of the rest have immigrant not far back in their ancestry.

Appropos of very little, my brother-in-law once went on a rant about immigrants coming over here stealing our jobs getting priority on the social etc. I pointed out to him that he'd spent most of his adult life unemployed, and the rest of it working but claiming (he was a low-life scum-bag). I asked him to tell me exactly what he thought that simply being born here entitled to him to, that immigrants were not, since he himself had contributed precisely nothing. I pointed out that any immigrant that came here and worked and paid taxes was contributing more than he was. That shut the gobshite up.

We are ALL immigrants from Africa we infested the world and continue to do so...IMO

The Youngsters think 20 bottles of alcopops and a couple of E's are the best way of breaking the boredom between knife fights. The middle-aged get their world view from Daily Mail editorials and hurl dangerously fast around our towns in white vans with half eaten cheese pasties in one hand and a cellphone in the other. Old people think it's fly to clap along like the mentally handicapped every time some smarmy crooner opens his fat chops to sing, and they still think it's OK to be a racist, because "we once owned their f*cking wog-land, you know!"

Anybody that we meet with even a slight European accent, usually gets greeted with a loud "Oi oi, fritz!" followed by a badly sung rendition of "Two world wars and one world cup, do-da, do-da" and we moan insesently about the Poles and Bulgarians constantly messing up the building trade by charging people a fair price and actually turning up to do the job... We shouldn't have to compete with that, right?

The Scots blame everything on the English, whilst half of them move to England and drone-on endlessly about Bonny Scotland, despite the fact that it never stops pissing down there and everyone's off their face on Buckfast.

The English think that the world owes them... well... everything. If there was a picture under the phrase "arrogant cock-wad" in the dictionary, it would be of an Englishman in Union Jack shorts, stood in the chip shop he opened in Málaga moaning about how immigrants and Europe ruined Britain which his why he left.

The Welsh... well, the Welsh are just the English with funny accents.
