I think what we can do is make a distinction between a scientific theory and scientific method. Like anything else in life there are good scientists, bad scientists, crazy scientists, dumb scientists, careful scientists and lazy scientists. So the application of scientific method depends on who is applying it and doesn't necessarily reflect poorly on the method itself.
Also we can say that nowadays most of the major kinks have been ironed out of the types of scientific predictions we use practically everyday. It's true that Newton was improved upon by Einstein but the types of calculations done by structural and civil engineers every day rely more on Newton and Hooke then Heisenberg and Einstein; it may not be that a calculation models reality in an absolute sense but it will certainly give predictable and reliable results in a way that Gurdjieff does not, which is not to invalidate the value of introspection but the inner and outer worlds should not be confused with one another. |

Thank you
It is late and time for rest but your contribution is appreciated. Gurdjieff contributed to the debate however his perception that humans were food for the moon disturbed myself. I find that Krishnamurti had more insight but I may find something else in a different now. Your observation that science has improved is correct but it can always be improved so therefore is never fact, just the latest theory. |

There are of course certain facts which go without question such as gravity I know it exists otherwise I wouldn't be stuck on this planet. I'm not entirely sure you are mate Just to emphasis, Einstein didn't 'invalidate' Newton, he simply added another layer of understanding by pointing out there were special circumstances where exemptions might apply. That's not to say that a new theory can't invalidate an old one, but the nature of the scientific method dictates that understanding 'trends' towards the truth. That's a statistical term which means in essence that you can quite quickly get to 'truth for all practical purposes' without neccesarily having 'the whole truth' in the sense of never being able to improve on it. |

Yeah super volcanoes look nasty... However, as Tootle said, we're talking about a diminishing set of scenarios... Our sheer numbers and technology would mean that all but the most significant of events would be unlikely to finish us ALL off completely. I'm not saying our species is invulnerable to extinction, but like Tootle, I'm saying that all bets are off. Imagine a time, in the not too distant future, where medicine has tamed contagious illnesses, and our species has established off world colonies.... What could extinct our species then? With regards to the monkey butlers... It'd be interesting to know how long it will be before science attempts to resurrect one of the extinct hominid species. Perhaps one of the homo genera such as Homo neanderthalensis (or Homo sapiens neanderthalensis, if you're not a single-origin believer). Would such a being have human rights? I'm talking alien invasion....... |

I doubt that the 'things' that may eventually colonise other planets will be strictly classified as 'human' any more than apes are human. Therein lies the rub, without a doubt the mutant fucks (read engineered for life in space) that get off this planet will bring about the extinction of the 'humans' they left behind.
As a human I have no more feelings for such beings as I do for Neanderthals so why should I care about space exploration or living on other planets, it ain't going to happen for me or anyone else on this planet. Our species is destined for extinction either by evolution or disaster, get used to it - not that you need to because lets face it you and your great great great great grandchildren etc etc will more than likely be long dead before either happens. |
