That whole "documentary" (using the term VERY loosly) was nothing but lies, misconceptions and spin, just a couple of examples...

The "biggest protest" ONLY about a third of the actual protest was about (fox)hunting and even less about gunn control. If i remember rightly the route of the protect through london started off at 1 point and then halfway through the march the route was devided into 2 foxhunters went 1 way and the anti war people went the other, the VAST majority of the protecters went with the anti-war lobbie.

The cop who says "for the first time ever bobbies are armed with guns" actually thats a COMPLETE LIE. In the UK ANY cop (as long as they choose who undertake the firearm training (which can only bee taken 2 years after qualifying as a policeman)) is permitted to take a gun on the beat (providing the cheif constable approves it) and this has been the case pretty much for ever.

and the Tony Martian thing well i think others have said it better then i could

Having grown up in a country (Texas) where guns are as common as boots on your feet...and moving to the UK and seeing NO guns at all is weird, for me anyway.
I believe the Brit police have a special squad who are armed, and are called out when needed...You can tell I dont know much about this subject can't you ?...anyway, I was always taught as a kid that a gun is a tool, no different to a hammer or a wrench, it has a certain job to do and you dont bring it out and point it unless you have every intention of using it...(why pick up a hammer if you dont have a nail to drive)...So i'm cool with guns, I only ever used mine once back home, if you ever see a guy with a serious limp and his buddies are calling him Lefty, blame me..I dont mind a joke, but I object very strongly to rape, so he got a .22 through the foot. My honor was intact, and he only got off with one and a half feet, a fair exchange I figure (considering what I could have shot off).
Anyway, I do ramble on dont I ?...The Brit police are really cool, they kinda take charge without appearing to take charge, if you know what I mean...so the lesson is, it's not the gun that's a problem, it's the person holding it you need to be aware of.
I am not allowed to own a gun in this country, your law's forbid it, but the truth is, I dont really need it here anyway, and it saves a lot of wear and tear on my garter, the longer i'm in this country, the more I like it.

be interesting to hear of members views on this subject..

Just making a point, she states she used a gun against an alleged rapist, then states she doesn't need one in the UK, even at half the rate of the US my question is still valid.

http://www.proz.com/kudoz/english_to_afrik...s_that_pub.html

You know...the rape rate is so high in the USA, and the murder rate is extremely high as well, I find it puzzling...why? Why is it so outstandingly higher than every other country?
WTF is going on here that makes the USA so much more violent?

Edit: inflated statistics? What would be the point of inflating rape and murder statistics?
http://www.leaderu.com/real/ri9502/sommers.html
Very long read but she points out how the stats were arrived at. (yes I ended a sentence in a preposition)

f33dback, you have a valid point, and it's one I dont have an answer to...I grew up in a country where guns are normal, then I move here (a long and boring story) and it's a completely different envirenment, I guess you have to live it to understand it...and I didnt say I didnt need it, I said I was forbidden by British law to own one. What you have to understand is men in the USA are 110% macho, that's what they like to think anyway, and anything that even looks like a threat to their machismo is in trouble...British men seem content with just being guy's, instead of acting like their dick is the answer to all things...
an example: a bar closes, and the bartender tells all the guy's to leave and go home...WRONG, the bartender cannot tell the guy's to go home, he CAN tell them to leave, and they cant stay here, but you cant tell them where to go.......get my point ?.
It's all machismo b/s, a woman can steer clear of trouble in a number of ways, saying no means yes, or shooting him in the foot is something the macho fool can really understand, but then it's still all your fault anyway 'cos you shouldnt have dressed like that in the first place..yadda yadda yadda
Being a tourist doesnt cut it, you wont see the real thing, ok, you'll have a good time and get drunk with the guy's maybe, but for women, it's a totally different ball game.....When I left Texas, the latest pick-up line was 'nice ass baby, get in the truck'..

Ok, segue to the UK, now I get 'hello, can I buy you a drink ?'....who needs a gun with a line like that ?..

Good reply, I know what you mean about the macho stuff, people talk smack to me sometimes and I laugh and I'm on my way, my friends chide me for this behavior "you have to make them respect you" ummmm no I don't, but if they want to take action against me then I am all about teaching respect.
Here in California I get to watch Latinos males get constantly caught in the machismo trap, oh well some cultures have it worse than others, I imagine you saw that in Texas as well.

I guess those Guy Ritchie movies aren't accurate tongue.gif

edited for my usual typos and bad syntax.

How is irrelevant, what the other person learns is just because you can't goad me into stupid behavior with words doesn't mean I am weak or a "pussy".

Even though I was born here we moved to Thailand before I was old enough to form memories, (not military) I have an odd disconnect in that I often don't feel like a "American" though I have to say the last 30 some odd years I have come to resemble one.

American or Thai, or anything in between doesnt really matter...you have a point of view on various subjects which appears to be informed and intelligent, in itself that demands respect...

Not certain, but I think it was Voltaire that said....I may not agree with your politics or your points of view, but i'll fight to the death to give you the right to air them.

Not a literal translation from the French, but you get the drift i'm sure..

Baldy, the fact that gun ownership is prevalent doesn't make one violent. I own guns, I know how to use them however I abhor violence. If someone comes after me with a weapon I wish to be holding more than my willy in my hand.

I think America has more violence because the criminals think they can get away with everything. A person can be arrested for beating the hell out of his wife bad enough that she gets put in the hospital, but if he has enough money or a good lawyer or both, he will be back in his home within 24 hours. A minor inconvenience compared to spending months in a cell being anally raped by Bubba and his friends.

That fucking idiot with the crowbar wants shooting (I wonder if he'd have 'walked the talk' if the car had a few boys in it?), the problem is that the people who deserve it are rarely the ones who get it.

Right see, if the bloke/woman in the car wasn't prepared to reverse a bit sharpish half way through the encounter and knock the crowbar weilding chap down, a move which he/she could probably have justified as panic, in the process rupturing the bloke severely, what makes you think he/she'd be willing to deliberately shoot the same person?

I thought that initially, until I realised that the 'mack daddy' hardman in the video was picking on a Woman who was, understandably, terrified.

That situation is an ideal 'pro' point for NRA lobbyists.
