I came across this Swedish ad for Absolut Vodka today, which has been running in Mexico for several months. Although it's been running for some time, it really seems to be hitting a few a raw nerves with a lot of Americans in various blogs etc around the interweb.

Number of downloads: 3What do members here think? Why do you think it is such a touchy subject? Is it disrespectful to the US or inappropriate in some way... and if so, why? Are Americans having a sense of humour failure, or are they justified in being p*ssed at this ad? |

*shrug*
I honestly couldn't tell ya. Trying to remember here. Isn't that about the way it looked before we redrew the line at the Rio Grande? Don't get why people would be offended. As a matter of fact I think it probably be the other way around if you think about it. Being as the only time it you might think it would be accurate is if you were skunked. Another *shrug* from me. I don't get it. What are the people whom are ticked saying about it? |

Hilarious! 66% of people voted to boycott the product. The bottle of Absolut is in Venezuela so Hugo Chavez isn't going to give it up without a fight!

I have not seen the ad and frankly the argument doesn't even interest me. The only thing I've noticed is that if you're living anywhere in the green area, you need to speak Spanish to get by. I live in the green and don't speak it but in my job I deal with the public and probably 50% of my customers are Hispanic. Even though I don't speak it, I am learning to understand it more and more each day.
I suspect the hot button of this issue is illegal immigration more than anything else. |

I honestly don't get jingoism. Borders are just lines we draw on our little colored maps. They're different now than they were two hundred years ago and they'll be different once again in another two hundred.
I do think this emphasizes how we concentrate on our own little slice of land. My first thought on seeing the ad was that Florida should have been the same color as Cuba. |

I suspect the hot button of this issue is illegal immigration more than anything else. I suspected as much, myself... I get the impression that many white Americans in that part of the US feel threatened by the growing Hispanic and Latino influence on their culture. |

Indigenous people start creeping back into their own lands and it causes national outrage... This post has been edited by m15hun: Aug 11 2008, 01:11 PM |

Well, probably not "indigenous," but certainly there earlier.
Either way, I found some of the responses in those two examples a little OTT... there is definitely some resentment, I think. |

I wonder what the percentage of Mexicans/Latinos doing the cheaply paid manual labour is?
I had a conversation with an American friend the other week how was telling me all bout how "his country" was being slowly invaded by Mexicans and how it was bad for his nation, twice during the Skype video call he had to break off and answer the door, one time was the pool boy coming for his monthly payment and the other was the gardener telling him he had finished.... can you guess what nationality they were? People who complain the loudest are the ones who benefit the most
ps. Pool in garden is quite luxurious isn't it, he shouldn't fear Mexicans taking jobs any time soon. |

Maybe not entirely, but they're bred from Mayans and the like - as you say, more indigenous than the European Yanks, that's for sure. (No offence American people, I didn't mean Yank pejoratively) |

Like here in the UK the main reason why you have immigrants coming into the country is to do the low paid menial jobs that people who have been born and bred in the country think is too badly paid for them to consider. My American friend often berates his 18 year old son who dropped out of education and sits around doing nothing all day, when offered a job working with the Hispanics who do the pools of the neighbourhood he refused point blank with the usual "I wouldn't get out of bed for that an hour" comment.
Personally I'm surrounded by Polish in my neck of the woods and I love 'em, they have a work ethic that hasn't been seen in the UK since the early 1900's. |

There are plenty of Polish lads and lasses round here and they're all nice, friendly people. On top of that there's now a local Polish market, some of the grub's fantastic! |
