i really, really, enjoyed this film. i was glued to my seat and riveted to the screen throughout - which is rare for me as i usually have to pause a few times during most films i watch. i don't get carsick or airsick or dizzy or have an epileptic seizure because of flashing lights or colours.
i thought it was an excellent piece in true Cinéma vérité style. since this is now the age of dime-a-dozen handycams (ok, i wish it were that cheap), phone cams, gootube, myface, yourbook, and every other so-called "social-networking" and video sharing website, i think it's (the film making style) a very good reflection of the times and what people are used to and will accept now and then. as far as there not being any "original ideas"...nothing is original anymore. just about everything had already been done by the time shakespeare was dead. and there usually aren't many original ideas in any film, especially horror and monster films. look at how many remakes and sequels of classic films there are. remakes don't need to be remade - it's only a way for the studios to make a quick buck. king kong didn't need to be remade, and neither do any of the living dead films. but they do it anyway. the only thing similar to blair witch was the handycam style. and this style is difficult to get right, so it isn't done very often. true that it would get very boring if every other film was made this way, but when it's done only once in a while, and done right, like with cloverfield and blair witch, then it's something special. blair witch 2 might have been better if it were made the same way and by the same filmmaker. anyway, that was way off topic... i originally came here to see if anyone knows why the movie is called cloverfield. i read somewhere that it's the name of the street in LA here jj abrams had the alias set and studio, but i can't confirm it. if that's true, it's a really stupid name for the film. but this is one dvd i'll buy, because i think it's special and there are probably a host of things i missed. i read that a 2 disc version is coming out after the initial 1 disc version - but only in the UK. does anyone know if that's true? |

I think they said something about the name Cloverfield & Central Park at the very beginning of the movie if I'm not mistaken |

oh, you mean all those twitchy titles at the beginning that were difficult to read? yeah, i saw that but it still doesn't make sense. i'm from ny and i've never heard of any area of central park or the city being called cloverfield, which is what they called the area where the camera was found.
in the park there's strawberry fields, bowling greens, the great lawn, and sheep meadow that i know of, but i never heard of cloverfield. although there is a nutters battery. and i looked at maps of the park and don't see any cloverfield. at first i thought it might refer to the ancient telephone number exchanges like butterfield, as in BUtterfield-8 which is the upper east side where i think maybe elizabeth lived because it's an area where wealthy people live and i think she was supposed to be from a wealthy family. so i checked the listings for ma bell's official early exchange names and there's no cloverfield listed. still, the title makes no sense to me and i don't like that unless i can have a viable explanation as to the reason for designating that area where the camera was found as cloverfield. So that's why that was the title, because the movie make no sense either!

Actually the shakey title says... dept of defense memorandum I believe,,,, some kind of report lol. the area once known as central park is now called cloverfield, of course its just military stuff in the movie. Trying to give it some plot I guess. Also the monster first attacked a ship in deep water, I think they were trying to say it came from the ocean. But this is just my take on it. jeff

The Cloverfield codename was supposed to be assigned to Central Park because it seems that clovers grow well in bombarded fields or something like that.
On the other hand...: http://www.moviesonline.ca/movienews_13879.html The movie was an enjoyable popcorn one. A bit disposable, too: one could want to watch it again on a good TV set to hunt for interesting details, but no more. Not explaining the monster was deliberate (less is more and so and so). The viral campaign was fun, although many of us confused elements of it with things that had nothing to do with the movie, so getting the idea that this was going to be a lovecraftian Cthulhu-fest of Michael Bay proportions There is talk of doing more Cloverfield from other characters' point of view and using other filmic styles. Well, they ought to do something about this oil rig viral thingy they YouTubed around the world http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gCgvbg1T2Wc (each language version adds something different) This post has been edited by moctezuma: Nov 9 2008, 01:38 AM |

A strange kind of non sensical B-ish movie with decent effects but lacking in plot.
As a horror film fan, I guess I liked it. I'd give it a 7/10. Thought they should have nuked the city at the end |

Hi. I am sorry if perhaps I'm in the incorrect thread with this particular blog post. I am attempting to attach a digital amplifier. The loudspeakers I have got are electrostatic speakers. The impedance of the loudspeaker resembles a capacitor that makes the amp unstable. If I use normal loudspeakers the amplifier functions fantastic. Nonetheless with my static speakers there is always a loud hissing sound. Is this particular dilemma related to how I am connecting the loudspeaker? Is there a fix for this particular dilemma? I'd been planning on utilizing a power transformer of some kind. Any advice is welcome. Thanks a lot.
