I'd like a pair of YMG's rose tinted glasses... However I must admit that the working class estate I live in is not as bad as it was 20 years ago and that goes for a lot of N Ireland since the cease fire. Unfortunately I can't comment on the rest of the UK.... I have noticed a total lack of respect for adults from children here, especially since coming from India where if you scolded mischievous kids the parents would back up the adult, even tourists... The family unit is a lot stronger in working class Indian families too.

QUOTE (enigmaenigma @ Aug 13 2008, 09:46 PM) *
I’d like to know if Barclays bank or other businesses had ever been served with such a notice about graffiti that has been left in situ – I would hazard a guess at not, as most businesses, unlike mere residents, have financial clout

So maybe they fix the problems and remove the grafitti before the Council has to take action. I know that my employer has had to pay out thousands of pounds to have grafitti removed from the walls of its premises, even though that cash should have gone towards the students we teach.

The article says that these people went to the Council and complained about the grafitti that had been painted on their alleyway fences, the shirked their responsibility, which lets face it seems to be the trend in this day and age of Rights but no Responsibilities. If someone sprayed grafitti on my walls I wouldn't be running to the Council to get them to sort it out, I might be phoning them asking for the number of a good grafitti removal firm, but I certainly wouldn't expect them to come and remove it.

I won't deny the actions of the Council weren't bad, they could probably have handled things better, we'll never know the true ins and outs because that would never make the news, much better to portray the poor home owners fighting the bureaucrats.

TBH, fecking councils have no right to demand that anybody clean and de-vandalise their property when pretty much every council estate in the country have vacant properties with boarded up or broken windows, garage blocks covered in graffiti and/or kicked-in roller doors... not to mention graffitied signage and bridges/underpasses and other public places etc that the councils are responsible for that are vandalised to buggery.

@ eazbak
When you are aware of this current trend that seems to be taking place within and around Greater Manchester

Alley gating

Then a council getting uppity and forceful about minor vandalism on a garden fence that borders an alleyway, tends to set alarm bells ringing

What better way for a council to derogate from a whole lot of responsibility for an alley way or the like, than to steer any neighbouring residents towards such a scheme or to think that such a scheme may be an option

Don’t get me wrong, Alley gates can be a possible solution and be of benefit to residents - but as with most councils, it tends to be a case of one size fits all or blanket approach at times
