I've always trusted VLC but on the very odd occasion it doesn't want to play, I'll try Media Player Classic

VLC here, occasionally MPlayer. The big difference between them and some of the other things you're using (or Windows Media Player) is that you don't need a bunch of differenct codecs to get them working.
What, specifically, is going wrong with VLC? It really should play everything you can throw at it, and be highly configurable. If you've got a TV tuner card, try mediaportal (the PC fork of XBMC). That will take some work to get running right, but its a beauty when it does. I'd recommend VLC Portable, as you don't even need to install it, and can just run it directly from a USB stick (or your desktop). If you have a big external hard drive, you can stick it on there with a few movies, to watch when you're away from your home machine. Put it on my mum's machine, and she's not had a problem with it (so it must be pretty easy). That portable apps site is a really good source for a lot of other easy to use free software. @ADL242 I installed GOM Player and it was ok but even with a quad core if the cpu was working over 10 percent GOM Player struggled badly to play anything. I currently use Windows Media Player simply because I stream all my Movies, TV Shows from my pc to my large screen tv and it handles everything well plus I have a remote control for it.

You already have the best, MPC. If it's not working, something else is wrong with your system

MPC is the one I have settled on.
I have a 2GHz Dell with 1GB memory and MPC plays 720p with only the odd judder and stall. VLC or GOM are hopeless at the same task. |

Jack of all trades master of none comes to mind. Why not use different players depending on needs?

I currently use Windows Media Player simply because I stream all my Movies, TV Shows from my pc to my large screen tv and it handles everything well plus I have a remote control for it. Try setting the Task Priority to High in its Preferences>Playback Also, the high-quality mode is very demanding so installing regular mode instead, might solve it too. Gom player (Gom means bear hence the bear paw logo) is the most widely used player on the Korean market, it plays smi subpictures correctly encoded, which BS/VLC dont seem to. ie I can't see asian subs with those players.
My preference is kmplayer. Probably the same as MPC, but less ugly. http://kmplayer.en.softonic.com/ This post has been edited by cranial: Dec 11 2008, 07:39 PM |
