I've downloaded a foreign language film as an avi file with .sub (.srt) file. When I play it back on my pc with vlc player it plays fine with subtitles. I want to convert it to playback on my dvd player to watch on tv (as vob files) how can I add the subs and what's the best software? I usually use Super DVD Creator to convert avi to vob. I tried this with the subs but it didn't work. Cheers |

TMPGEnc or TMPGEncExpress will "hardcode" the subs when you use it to convert the movie to MPEG, provided they are in the same folder as the avi and play automatically with the movie when you load it into your media player app - this usually requires you have a subtitle application installed such as DirectVoBSub (clicky linky)
VLC is a cool little app for playing stuff back, but if you're going to convert media you're going to need some of the apps, filters and codecs that VLC allows you to dispense with when all you require is playback. Install DirectVoBSub and see if Super DVD Creator will hardcode the subs for you this time... if not, TMPGEnc or TMPGEncExpress definitely will with DirectVoBSub installed. |

Another program you could use is ConvertXtoDVD. The subs file will need to be in the same folder as the avi & named the same as the avi.

If TMPGEnc wont load your avi (and with what you said about VLC being your usual player) I would assume that the problem lies with the codecs you have installed (or lack of, to be more accurate)
Go back to the site I linked you to for the DirectVobSub thing-ma-bob and grab yourself some codecs... usually I wouldn't recommend a codec pack, but seeing as I don't know what codecs you have/need/are short of etc, it'll be best all round if you just go with a full codec pack install and cover all your bases. K-Lite Codec Pack is as good as any, so give that a bash (the full one). |
