My PC keeps freezing. I've ran spybot, malwarbytes, defragged it, AVG, and I still can't figure out what's causing it to keep freezing. Here is the HiJackThis log.

In my experience system freezes are usually caused by overheating or faulty hardware.
Does it freeze running something specific or just randomly? Does it freeze in safe mode? Check if your fans are working and the heat sinks aren't clogged up with dust , most important ones are the cpu fan and the gfx fan. |

Try C*Cleaner you can choose which programmes are allowed to work on start up. Be careful of stopping A/V and graphics but look out for stuff like Adobe, Quicktime etc. There is no reason for them to run at start up but most people just click accept, accept etc. when installing as the installalation software scares them with things like "custom install for experienced users only"
Also be careful with C*Cleaner if you just accept it will install Yahoo toolbar. |

yep, sounds like a bad driver. If it dont freeze up in safe mode, its a driver. Think of the thing you most recently did or updated on your computer, and undo it. Most things that run at startup can be seen in your tray down in the lower right corner near the clock. Just bring up the options for those apps and set them to not start at runtime. also check your startup folder and make sure its empty. START>ALL PROGRAMS>STARTUP

See, the thing is I share this PC with like 3 other people and they basically can't remember what the hell was the last thing they did, download, etc, so I don't what was last updated, installed, etc. I tried just restoring the system to an earlier date but the PC would'nt restore. I assume there might've been a virus or something in the restore volume cause I know that's where they like to hide. Ran all virus, spyware, maleware apps I have and found nothing. Cleaned the fan and I was told it was working fine till someone else installed something, now it's back to freezing again. As far as the CCleaner, I had that installed but I did'nt see any need to run it again but since it's recommended I give it a try, I will. Thanks for all the help.
Oh yeah, almost forgot. Can a windows update make the PC freeze randomly? I think I remember the same thing happening before but I'm not sure. This post has been edited by pHound: Sep 14 2009, 11:55 AM |

have u tried doing a memcheck?
download memtest86 (google it) and make a bootable floppy or burn it to a cd ,and then boot from it. i usually find a that regular freezing pc tends to have at least 1 faulty mem stick ,other than that it could possibly be the PSU ,on its way out and its struggling. |

i have suffered from a similar problem in the past with an old tower i owned. it would freeze at random intervals but not in safe mode. the problem was the cpu in the tower had been damaged by overheating. i run motherboard monitor which measures case and processor temperature and noticed that the processor ran cooler when in safe mode due to the fact that in safe mode there are a lot fewer processes running in the background than are running during normal operation. While it may possibly be a damaged driver it is more likely that you have an overheating problem. try downloading and installing motherboard monitor and keep an eye on the temp while the computer is running under normal operation. anything over 55-60 Celsius is cause for concern and can cause the computer to freeze. the first thing i would recommend trying is reinstalling the operating system and all drivers and see if that solves the problem. if that doesn't fix the problem it is most likely a hardware problem. the PSU is an unlikely source because any spike or drop in power level will either trip the electronic circuit breaker or not supply enough power for the computer to operate. both of which would result in the computer shutting off rather than freezing. the most likely component will be either the cpu or possibly the graphics card.

Had the same problem Got round it for a while using app 'anticrash' Eventually got it fixed, it turned out to be a faulty heat sensor on the M/B. If I can find it, I'll post it as a torrent (may be there already) good luck |

Mostly Freezing problems come for overheating, Check the heatsink or take it to a technitian to change the Thermal paste or Thermal grease.
Take care |

In this case I would have to agree about a piece of software beeing the most obvious culprit.
Overheating, faulty PSU, memory are the usual suspects, but since you run fine in safe mode and the only real difference between safe and normal mode are the drivers loaded at boot, the driver is the problem. The driver could also be a hardware device that has a problem communicating with the driver. Maybe a logged boot (F8 at boot) and note wher the system might hang or try bluescreenview. Just a thought from some amount of experience. It all amounts on how exactly the system acts up and when as mentioned. Software including: Virus and any piece of written code. I personally would do a clean install, even a repartition of the drive and see if that does it. Better late than ever so hope you can use my advice. Well after some reconsideration your best options is in the eventviewer. There you will be able to identify the device that stopped responding or the corresponding driver or software and that should be the first place to look. After that you need to do some detective work yourself or post again if nessasary. Good luck. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Event_Viewer *edited This post has been edited by nightspydk: Feb 15 2012, 08:20 PM |
