Tried to download some new Windows update this morning, I think it was service pack 4, could be wrong though. I then restarted my computer and couldnt get back onto AOL or Internet Explorer so went back to restore point afew days ago and all was fine. Have just turned my computer off and come back to start it up again but as as soon as the black screen came on with the Windows XP logo it went to a blue screen with the following error note:
IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL I couldnt get off that screen and every time I turn the computer off I come back to this page went I restart, thankfully I can get onto the net through my laptop so I can ask for help |

ahhh... the good old NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL error, this a horrible error as it can sometimes be impossible to fix. It should indicate a buggy device driver or system file and restoring to an earlier date or uninstalling the driver should fix the problem... but in reality it can also be a "catch all" error message that XP throws up just because it thinks you'll be happier to see an error message than it just wave a white flag and say "I have no friggin' idea what I've done now".
Try with the F8 button after the PC posts, choose "last known config" and see what happens, if no joy you can try F8 again and go in in safe mode and then reboot (no idea why but sometimes XP will boot fine after a safe mode)... if all else fails try and get all your data off the hard drive and then restore/reinstall. |

Thanks for the advice guys but sadly no luck so far, tried last known configuration that didnt work. Went into safe mode and restarted which hasnt helped and also went into safe mode and restored to 2 other dates from weeks ago but still exactly the same. Looks like im going to have to reboot completly and lose stuff doesnt it?

Not necessarily. If you can get in using safe mode you can back everything up and reinstall, but before doing that just try to uninstall the servicepack/update that caused all this. This can be done from safe mode.
Before doing a clean reinstall you could also try the non destructive reinstall as posted in the guides forum. linky. |
