I have been relegated to the conservatory with my Xbox 360, I have been playing it on an HD 40 inch LCD tv and now have to use a 28 inch widescreen which is a disapointment to say the least.
As the picture was via the HDMI cable it was cracking however the only cable I have that works on the other TV is componant and I can really see the difference in quality. Would I be better of getting a Svideo lead and will the picture be much better? Im slightly gutted to have to move tvs however till I can afford an HD TV for the conservatory im stuck... As usual any help is appreciated. |

S-Video sucks hard. It's much worse then RGB SCART, so better use that (SCART can also do S-Video btw). If you use component then S-Video might yield an improvement (colour and chrome separated instead of mixed)

cheers jakster, I have had a look on the Game website and their leads are £17.99 so im off to Ebay and will get one much cheaper

VGA is way above S-Video as it uses an RGB signal, just like component. SCART can be the same as VGA (different timings) but most cheap sets use S-Video or Composite over SCART. Converting from SCART to S-Video/Composite won't do any good as Composite/S-Video are also transferred over SCART. Only useful SCART is RGB. But I think SCART is Europe only? Anyway I propose the following list (conversion plugs from one to another are useless and you better not use them), from best to worst 1 HDMI 2 Component 2 VGA 2 SCART RGB 3 S-Video (can also be over SCART) 4 Composite Component, VGA and SCART RGB are mostly the same. SCART RGB and VGA are almost compatible (in the extent that you can connect a SCART connector to your VGA port if you dare) and component is normally indicated as a YPbPr, which uses a bit less bandwidth then RGB. You can do HD over this if there was no DRM. S-Video encodes the signal in Luma and Chroma (light and colour) an is not able to do HD signals. It uses less wires so the quality is less then the RGB/YPbPr encoding. It cannot do HD signals. Composite encodes all the information in one signal and thus has the worst signal. It's the same encoding technique as over the cable (Coaxial) but bigger bandwidth I think. The Xbox 360 can do both RGB/YPbBr (read manual and look at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Component_vid...ersus_composite ) and composite but composite is ugly. |

I have found out why my picture is so crappy, COD4 and Halo 3 play at 60hz however unfortunatly my TV is only 50hz... Gonna have to get me an HD tv for the conservatory.

hey my question is (sorry for the highjack
 ) I read you can plug a usb drive into a xbox and watch .avi and what not files through it ?.. Is this true?.. If so how do you go about doing it?.. , plug in , turn on the box & ?.. I assume some sort of menu option pops up?... I ask cause I download files for a friend and this would be a handy way of doing rather than burning a dvd all the time |

This was on a website I have Googled, not sure if it works but maby? I will try with My Ipod which I have films on as its a FAT32 harddrive now.

The great thing about Partition Magic is that you don't have to have any serious technical knowledge. FAT32 allows your hard drive to be used by your Xbox 360. nuts ... they can never just make it easy and have something right in the tv or system it self can they ?
 ah well! I give it another 5-10 years before every tech out there starts to have a usb port on it sounds like its more easy to just keep burning the dvds  |

I plugged my Ipod into the 360 and for music it works fine as it will see the MP£ files however Xvid movies would not work
